Jessica Mayberry is the founding director of Video Volunteers, a governance and accountability organization in India that identifies, trains and empowers media producers from marginalized communities across India’s poorest districts, whose videos and data-gathering efforts have reached all corners of the Indian media. Video Volunteers’ reporting network has enabled more than 1000 successful village-led action campaigns on issues ranging from gender, to human trafficking, to corruption, to improvement of local government programs.Jessica is a Fellow of Ashoka, TED and Echoing Green. She has also been recognized as an Architect of the Future by the Waldzell Insitute of Austria, and as an “Outstanding Young Person” by the Junior Chamber International Osaka. Under her leadership VV has won numerous awards. These include the Knight News Challenge, the most competitive award for innovations in news and information; the Edelgive Social Innovations Award for gender; the NYU-Stern Business School Business Plan competition; a Tech Award, and a shortlist for the King Baudouin (of Belgium) Foundation International Development Prize. Prior to Video Volunteers, Jessica worked in television in New York at Court TV, the Fox News Channel, and CNN. She has served on the board of Free the Children, the world’s largest organization of “Children Helping Children” and on the Advisory Council of Counterpart International, and currently serves on the advisory board of Coda Media. She holds a degree in Modern History and Modern Languages from Oxford University, from which she graduated in 1999. Her passion for social entrepreneurship and activism began in 2002, when she spent nine months training marginalized women in video production as a William J. Clinton Fellow of the American India Foundation.
