RightsCon Toronto 2018

Every year, the CIGI-Ipsos Global Survey on Internet Security and Trust polls more than 24,000 internet users in more than 23 countries on their perceptions of online privacy, free expression, corporate data practices, trust in governments and private corporations, and other topics related to internet governance. This session will present findings from the 2018 survey and discuss their implications for internet policy, including issues of particular concern to the developing world and emerging economies.
Because this is the fourth iteration of the CIGI-Ipsos survey, it allows us to see how perceptions of privacy, free expression and government behaviour have changed over time. Topics such as these reflect whether internet users feel their rights are being respected online. The data – which includes respondents from several developing-world countries such as Tunisia, Kenya, Nigeria and Pakistan – also shows how these sentiments vary both between countries and between regions.
This panel will discuss how public sentiment around issues of online trust points to policy alternatives that can help keep the internet free, open, well-governed and accessible to all.
