Building an Open Source Tech Stack for Open Source Investigation

Human rights advocates such as Syrian Archive, Amnesty International, WITNESS, the ICC, Carter Center and UC Berkeley's Human Rights Center are all pioneering the use of "open source investigation": the verification, analysis and preservation of citizen, perpetrator and eyewitness media uploaded to social platforms for human rights documentation.

Given the increasing volume of human rights-related content posted to social platforms, it's essential that open source and accessible tools are made available and localized for human rights defenders around the world. In this panel, we'll present some of the open source technologies currently used for the scraping, preservation, verification, analysis and visualization of citizen media for human rights documentation, including:

  • Scraper suite Sugarcube
  • Collaborative verification platform 
  • Check- Machine vision framework VFrame
  • Archer Metadata Viewer

We'll also map out some of the other available open source technologies available for different aspects of the challenge, and make the case for the high potential impact of integration support for this emergent "open source stack" for open source investigation.
