The Internet Giants: concentration in the Internet layers and its impacts to freedom of expression and other human rights

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

Platforms, like Google and Facebook, have been increasingly concentrating significant market power. Their dominance impacts on economic, cultural, social and political issues, and mainly affects the exercise of freedom of expression and other human rights. The session will discuss and analyze how concentration in the platforms layer impacts these rights, how it may affect pluralism and diversity, and concrete action to tackle the negative effects of concentration on freedom of expression.

Unfortunately, the OAS Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression, Edison Lanza had to do a last-time mission to evaluate the situation of FoE in Nicaragua. He then won’t be able to make it to Rightscon, and apologize for that. We then did a last minute invitation to Richard Wingfield, Legal Officer at Global Partners Digital, who kindly accepted, and will join us for this session.
