A discussion on the outcomes of UX workshops which present both challenges and insights for the engagement of trainers in the process of user experience. In particular, our perceived role of trainers and software developers in making digital security tool interfaces more usable for the public and how the collaboration of these talents, i.e training and development can make use of user feedback to redesign pre-existing security tools and applications. We hope to encourage a commitment from open-source developers in reviewing feedback on security tools collected by digital security trainers from East Africa

How we developed an e-learning website for activists and journalists: Lessons from Advocacy Assembly (Small Media)

The session will discuss Small Media's experiences developing the e-learning platform Advocacy Assembly. We will talk about the success stories, and the not-so-success stories of the platform so far, and share some of the best practices we have to share around designing online education resources for activists and advocates in the Middle East.

Advocacy Assembly's online multimedia courses are taught by human rights, media, design and data professionals from leading organisations from around the world, and are all available in English, Persian and Arabic.

Accessing Government Services: Shame Disrespect and User Experience

Digital government is increasingly seen as the solution to improving access to and uptake in social services and programs. Digital applications are being grafted onto analog social services, or operating as the primary access channel, without recognizing the stressful and sometimes traumatic and triggering experience that applicants and participants face in accessing social services including shelters and subsidized housing, social assistance, employment programs, EI, and immigration. This session presents UX research in social service design and lessons gleaned from in-person and traditional service delivery and explores the challenges facing applicants with low digital literacy.
