One of the strongest threats to heterosexual women and LGBTIQ people is non-consensual pornography, this means the dissemination of graphic and audiovisual material of an erotic or explicit sexual nature without consent (often with the intention of humiliating, intimidating or extorting the victim). Non-consensual pornography is recognized as a gender-based violence of a sexual nature, and a common way to crack on digital privacy, and heterosexual women and LGBTIQ people have every right to protect themselves from it and to resist it.

Victims in the Global South usually must cope with very similar problems when countering non-consensual pornography: lack of specific laws, big internet companies with no legal representation in our countries, platforms with lack of cultural diversity in their ToS and tools, structural gender violence in societies, etc.

That’s why this skill seminar seeks to provide concrete tools for digital rights advocates, feminists and LGBTIQ activists and general audiences from the Global South to understand:
• How to report a case in a platform content and understand the most common problems.
• General overview of the key legal trends in our countries.
• How to collect evidence and access to justice
• How to address the issue in specific communities where non-consensual pornography is usual (educational institutions, workplaces, etc).
• What are the technical tools for resistance.
• What are the legal, technical and community challenges to address in a proper way this type of gender violence.

During the workshop we will present each area, exposing key findings and best practices, but at the same time receiving questions, suggestions and feedback from the participants who have surely experienced cases as these, giving an opportunity to open a broader debate, pointing to the use of technologies as a tool of liberation.

After this skill seminar, participants from the community of digital rights will know a set of good practices and tools to fight against non-consensual pornography, but hopefully they will also have fresh critical approaches to non-consensual pornography in the Global South. We hope that cooperation and conversation in this regard will continue even after the RightsCon.

Moderators
